When the admin starts to pile up, the obvious answer is to hire someone to handle it. Before you do, it is worth being clear about what that hire actually costs, and what the alternative looks like for the repeatable part of the work.

The true cost of an administrator

A salary is only the start. For a full-time administrator in the UK, the real cost includes:

Salary, typically £24,000 to £30,000 for an experienced administrator
Employer National Insurance and pension contributions, often another 15 to 20 percent on top
Recruitment cost to find them
Onboarding and training time before they are productive
Management time, holiday and sick cover, equipment and software

All in, a £27,000 administrator costs a good deal more than £27,000, and a chunk of their week goes on work that is repetitive and rules-based rather than skilled.

The alternative for the repeatable work
