ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot vs an AI agent for business
The difference lies in who runs the work and who answers for it. ChatGPT, Claude and Copilot are assistants a business runs for itself. Anthropic's and Microsoft's pages describe drafting, research, agents and scheduled tasks you set up. OpenAI introduced ChatGPT agent in July 2025. A managed AI agent takes one process and is run for you.
Choose ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot when
The aim is to make each person quicker at drafting, summarising and research.
Someone in the business enjoys setting these tools up and has the hours to keep them working.
The work starts and finishes inside the apps the assistant already lives in, such as Word, Outlook and Teams.
Choose AI staff when
You want one whole process off your team's desks, with someone outside the business answerable for it.
Nobody has the time to write the rules, check the output and fix it when a system changes.
The work needs approval points and a record of every action, agreed before it starts.
The same questions asked of both
What the assistants include is taken from Anthropic's and Microsoft's own pages, read on 3 October 2026, and from OpenAI's announcement of ChatGPT agent. For ChatGPT, and for any plan, check the vendor's own page.
Who does the work
Your team drives it
A person asks, reads the answer and acts on it. OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic all now offer agents or scheduled tasks you set up yourself.
The agent
It works through the process from start to finish and stops for a person at the points agreed with you.
Who sets it up
You do
Someone turns the process into instructions, connects the apps and tests the result against real work.
We do
The role is scoped with you in writing, then built and tested before it touches live work.
Who checks and fixes it
You do
Whoever set it up checks its output and mends it when an app, a screen or a process changes.
We do
When one of your systems changes, we change the agent to match. Its work is reviewed with you each month.
What it is good at
Drafting, research, your own agents
Microsoft's page lists ready-made agents and agents you create for your own uses. Claude's plans include web search, file creation and connectors.
One defined role
One process carried across your systems from start to finish: chasing, data entry, checks and routine updates.
How you pay
Per user
Microsoft and Anthropic price by the user or seat. Count the time of whoever sets it up and keeps it working as well.
A build fee, then a monthly fee
A build fee, then a monthly fee for the role, which includes managing it. Our starting price is on the homepage.

Where ChatGPT, Claude or Copilot wins
These assistants are very good. For drafting an email, summarising a long document, working through a spreadsheet or researching a question, a licence for each person is the right answer, and AI staff are not built for it. Microsoft 365 Copilot works inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and Teams, where your team already works.
They can do more than answer. ChatGPT agent carries out a task you describe, asking permission before actions of consequence. Microsoft lets you create agents of your own for Copilot, and Claude's paid plans can be handed tasks to run on a schedule, with admin controls for connectors on the Team plan. Someone with the hours can take them a long way. A business that wants to run the software itself should buy the software.
Where AI staff win
The subscription is one cost. The other is the time of whoever turns the process into rules, decides the approval points, checks what comes out and mends it when a system changes. Ask who that would be in your business.
These assistants are built on excellent models; what separates them from AI staff is who answers for the work. An Agent Resource is AI staff in that sense: its one written role is scoped with you, and we build, test and keep working the AI agent that does it. More in what a managed AI service is. Keep the assistant licences too, since the two do different jobs.
Questions owners ask
What is the difference between ChatGPT and an AI agent?
You direct ChatGPT, including the agent OpenAI added in July 2025. A managed agent is run for you. It is no cleverer, and we would not claim it. The difference is a written role, access limited to what the role needs, approval points, an action log and people who manage it and put it right.
We already pay for Copilot. Can't we just use that?
Keep Copilot. It helps each person write, summarise and find things faster inside Microsoft 365, and Microsoft lets you create agents for it too. An Agent Resource is for when you want one whole process taken off a desk, across the systems it touches, with someone else building and managing it.
Could our team build this themselves with one of these assistants?
They might, since OpenAI, Microsoft and Anthropic all offer agents or tasks you set up yourself. The questions are whose time it takes and who owns it afterwards. It is a sound route where someone has the hours and interest to write the rules, test them and keep them working, and not otherwise.
Is our data used to train the AI?
Your data is stored in the UK, and is never used to train AI models. For an assistant you buy yourself, read the vendor's terms for your plan. Anthropic's pricing page, for example, lists no model training on your content by default for its Team plan.
An Agent Resource compared with
Zapier, Make or Power Automate
Steps that never vary belong in a workflow you build; work that needs reading and chasing belongs with an Agent Resource.
An Agent Resource compared with
Building it in-house
Has someone the skill and the time to own an agent? Build it yourself. If nobody has, an Agent Resource fits.

An MSP's AI offer
Your MSP keeps the IT, the licences and everyone's AI assistant running, while an Agent Resource does one admin role.
